Argentina: Nationwide demonstrations likely through early September in support of vice president after gun incident /update 2
Rallies likely to continue across Argentina through early September in support of vice president after gun incident. Disruptions likely.
Event
Demonstrations in support of Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner are likely to continue across Argentina through early September after an incident where an assailant attempted to assassinate Fernandez de Kirchner from close range before being detained by security forces. Kirchner was not harmed in the incident, but clashes between police and demonstrators followed the arrest.
So far, supporters of the vice president have organized demonstrations in the cities of Buenos Aires, Rosario, and Cordoba to denounce the incident. On Sept. 2, demonstrators gathered at noon in Buenos Aires and marched from the intersection of 9 de Julio and Avenida de Mayo to the Plaza de Mayo; in Rosario, protesters demonstrated at 11:00 in the Plaza 25 de Mayo. In Cordoba, demonstrators gathered at the intersection of the Rio Canada and Avenida Colon and Plaza Tosco beginning at 18:00. Demonstrations are very likely in other locations around the country.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security posture over the coming days. Clashes between supporters and opponents of Kirchner are possible. Skirmishes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out; police may attempt to forcibly disperse groups perceived to be disruptive, including using tear gas or water cannons. Transport and business disruptions are likely during any demonstration that may materialize.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
