Argentina: Protest planned in downtown Buenos Aires Sept. 6

Activists affiliated with the Youth Union for Socialism (Union de Juventudes por el Socialismo) and other organizations intend to rally in Buenos Aires Sept. 6 to oppose a recent measure that reduced the number of beneficiaries of a scholarship for young people. Demonstrators intend to gather in Obelisco, in downtown Buenos Aires, starting at 11:00. Activists have indicated they may remain at Obelisco indefinitely if their demands are not met by the government.

Thousands of people are likely to participate in the rally, which is likely to cause transport and business disruptions in the area. Heightened security is likely. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
