Mali: Activists to stage anti-MINUSMA demonstration in Bamako Sept. 22

Activist group to hold anti-MINUSMA protest in Bamako, Mali, Sept. 22.

Warning

Event

Malian civil society movement Yerewolo Debout sur les Remparts plans to stage a demonstration at the Monument of Independence in Bamako from 14:00 Sept. 22. The purpose of the event is to demand the immediate departure of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) from the country.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security around the city as a precaution and in order to contain the protesters. Localized traffic disruptions are possible. Clashes with police could occur if activists fail to heed orders to disperse.

Context

Yerewolo Debout sur les Remparts has been one of Mali's most vocal critics of MINUSMA and proponents of the mission's withdrawal from the country. The group has a history of protest activity in Bamako, with demonstrations sometimes turning violent. It is unlikely that the organization will relent in its campaign demanding MINUSMA's departure; on the contrary, Yerewolo's activities could intensify.

Advice

Avoid the announced protest as a precaution and heed the instructions of local authorities. Monitor local media for updated information on any protests as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes erupt nearby, exit the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a publicly accessible non-governmental building until it is safe to depart.
