Mali: US Embassy issues demonstration alert for multiple gatherings in Bamako in celebration of Independence Day Sept. 22

US Embassy issues alert for celebratory gatherings in Bamako in connection with Malian Independence Day Sept. 22; disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

The US Embassy in Bamako has issued a demonstration alert indicating that multiple gatherings will likely occur in the capital in celebration of Malian Independence Day Sept. 22. The demonstration alert further cautions that these gatherings will probably cause significant traffic disruptions, including on bridges, as well as road closures, particularly in the afternoon.

The US Embassy has received the following reports in connection with Independence Day festivities:

  • Military celebrations are likely at Malian bases across Bamako.

  • Demonstrations and/or parades may occur on Avenue de la Nation/Route Nationale 5 (RN5).

  • Government motorcades may take place along Avenue de la Liberte.

  • Malian artists and civil associations will host a concert at Place de l'Independance at 16:00.

The US Embassy has accordingly advised American citizens to avoid demonstration-affected areas and refrain from driving in the capital after 13:00 to avoid being caught in the rallies and any related traffic jams.

Local and regional government offices may also host ceremonies nationwide. Increased security measures, including movement restrictions, are likely near holiday-related gatherings and parade routes. Government officials have declared Sept. 22-23 as paid, non-working holidays across the country; consequently, many government institutions and private businesses will likely remain closed during that time frame.

Advice

Avoid official Independence Day ceremonies, prominent cultural events, government buildings, and other crowded places due to possible security threats. Exercise caution if operating in demonstration-affected areas. Plan for traffic disruptions near event sites, especially in Bamako, and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Heed all official security and traffic advisories.
