Argentina: Public transport workers to launch nationwide strike Oct. 12-13

Public transport workers to launch nationwide strike in Argentina Oct. 12-13. Transport disruptions highly likely, except in Buenos Aires.

Warning

Event

Unionized public transport workers have announced a nationwide 48-hour strike from Oct. 12-13, excluding the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (Area Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, AMBA). Tram, bus and trolley workers affiliated with the Automotive Tramway Union (Union Tranviarios Automotor, UTA) will strike to demand improved salaries. Organizers have not called for protests; however, strike-related gatherings remain possible. Potential protest locations include government buildings in major cities and main routes across the rest of the country.

Significant disruptions to inter-city and intra-city travel are highly likely, especially in major cities such as Cordoba and Rosario. While the strike will not occur in Buenos Aires, inter-city travel with other major cities will likely be affected. Alternative modes of transportation will probably be in higher demand. Traffic congestion could be heavier as commuters who generally ride public transportation resort to using personal vehicles. Protests near government offices and along major roads are possible. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Confirm all public transport reservations. Check local media sources for up-to-date information on the status of public transportation. Allow extra time to reach destinations and consider alternative transport options to mitigate travel disruptions if operating in Argentina Oct. 12-13.
