Bolivia: Activists stage demonstration in Santa Cruz de la Sierra Oct. 21

Supporters of the governing Movement toward Socialism (Movimento al Socialismo, MAS) party have gathered at the Chiriguano Monument in Santa Cruz de la Sierra Oct. 21. The purpose of the gathering is to demonstrate in support of the government and against an upcoming general strike which is being planned by opposition leaders. The demonstration will likely cause localized transport and business disruptions, and police are likely to deploy to the area to monitor the gathering. Clashes are possible, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters or if members of rival political groups come in contact with one another.
