Bolivia: Truckers blockade Tambo Quemado crossing with Chile as of Oct. 28, with further planned, to protest export restrictions
Bolivian truckers blockade Tambo Quemado crossing with Chile as of Oct. 28, with further planned, to protest export restrictions.
Event
Truck drivers from the Bolivian Chamber of Transport (La Camara Boliviana de Transporte) have blockaded the Tambo Quemado border crossing with Chile as of early Oct. 28. The drivers are reportedly planning to expand the blockades to the Pisiga and Desaguadero crossings with Chile and Peru respectively Oct. 28. The protesters are reportedly denouncing the government's decision to impose export restrictions on certain agricultural goods to avoid domestic supply shortages and price increases amidst extensive, politically-motivated protests in Santa Cruz. The Bolivian Chamber of Transport is also threatening an indefinite strike from Oct. 28 if the government does not lift export restrictions.
Heightened security is likely at the scene of blockades. Disruptions to transit and to businesses dependent on truck freight are likely. Clashes between protesters and police are possible if police attempt to dislodge the blockade.
Tambo Quemado is approximately 221 km (138 miles) southwest of La Paz. Desaguadero is approximately 97 km (61 miles) west of La Paz. Pisiga is approximately 311 km (193 miles) south by southwest of La Paz.
Advice
Make alternative travel arrangements if planning on travelling through the affected crossings. Make alternative arrangements for trucked goods. Heed the advice of security personnel. Do not attempt to bypass blockades against the wishes of protesters; wait for police to dislodge the blockade.
