Informational

Event

Political activists associated with the Yerewolo Debout sur les Remparts (YDR) plan to stage a demonstration at Place du Cinquantenaire in Kati starting at 14:00 Nov. 22. The purpose of the event is to express discontent with the National Transitional Council (NTC) and to show solidarity with the group's leader, Adama Ben Diarra. Hundreds to several thousand people could participate in the action.

Heightened security, as well as localized business and transport disruptions, are likely near any protests that may materialize. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Counterdemonstrations in support of the transitional government are possible.

Kati is around 15 km (9 miles) northwest of Bamako.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to possible clashes. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Monitor local media and consult with trusted sources for updated information on any protests or enhanced security measures. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes erupt nearby, leave the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a secure nongovernmental building.
