The ruling Awami League (AL) party will hold a mass gathering at Dhaka's Suhrawardy Udyan landmark starting at 10:30 Dec. 24 as a part of its 22nd national council meeting. AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the event. Organizers claim the gathering will attract over 100,000 participants. The rally will coincide with the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) planned nationwide protests and marches that same day.

Authorities are maintaining an increased security posture near the vicinity of the announced event. Officials have issued a traffic advisory, implementing roadblocks along adjacent routes, such as Katabon and Minto roads and Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue. Clashes between AL activists and police, as well as between AL supporters and counterdemonstrators, are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely near the event venue through the evening of Dec. 24.
