Protests are likely in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, in late December, following the detention of Governor Luis Camacho Dec. 28.
Event
Protests are likely in late December in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and other areas of the Santa Cruz department following the detention of Santa Cruz Governor Luis Fernando Camacho by national authorities. Camacho is also one of the main leaders of the national opposition. Government officials confirmed the arrest, and it is likely Camacho will be transported to La Paz.
Protests are likely in multiple areas of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, including in and around the Viru Viru International Airport (VVI), located north of the city, as well as in major highways, squares, and government centers. Transport and business disruptions are likely. Camacho supporters tried to block planes from departing and arriving from VVI after the initial reports of his detention; air travel disruptions are possible Dec. 28 and the following days.
Context
Camacho was detained in relation to the events of 2019, in which then-President Evo Morales was removed from office after the controversial presidential elections. Camacho was one of the leaders of the opposition protests that broke out following reports of electoral fraud.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Confirm appointments and travel before leaving your lodging. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in late December.
