Bangladesh: Officials to host the annual Bishwa Ijtema religious gathering in Tongi Jan. 13-15 and Jan. 20-22
Bangladesh to host annual Bishwa Ijtema religious gathering in Tongi Jan. 13-15 and Jan. 20-22. Disruptions likely through Jan. 22.
Event
Officials in Bangladesh will host the annual Bishwa Ijtema (World Muslim Congregation) in Tongi, Gazipur District, Jan. 13-15 and 20-22. Around four million participants will primarily assemble along the banks of the Turag River during the first phase, Jan. 13-15, and the second phase, Jan. 20-22. Several official events, including religious festivals, are likely to occur in Gazipur District and nearby areas in Dhaka through Jan. 22.
Authorities plan to maintain a heightened security posture near the main religious procession and are likely to deploy near government buildings, crowded marketplaces, major transport hubs, and routes leading toward official event sites. The Ijtema leads to major traffic disruptions in Dhaka every year, mainly in the Mohakhali, Kakoli, Nikunja, Khilkhet, Uttara, and Tongi areas and along Progati Sarani road. Increased congestion is likely at transport hubs, such as Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), Dhaka, and Tongi railway stations. Increased traffic congestion is possible despite Dhaka Metropolitan Police's efforts to limit vehicular access on major thoroughfares. Flight disruptions may occur at DAC through Jan. 22 due to the proximity between the airport and the main religious gathering site. Local businesses may close voluntarily during scheduled event days. Lingering disruptions are possible as participants depart Tongi on Jan. 22.
Advice
Nonparticipants should avoid the event site on the banks of the Turag River as a standard security precaution. Confirm business appointments, road status, and transport reservations through Jan. 22. Exercise caution while driving and allow additional time to reach destinations near the impacted areas. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
