Informational

Event

Unidentified assailants killed at least six people in two simultaneous attacks along National Route 6 in the Koulikoro Region late Jan. 2. Attackers on motorcycles reportedly targeted a toll booth at Kassela, as well as a fire and rescue squad station in Markacoungo, Zan Coulibaly township, at about 21:00 Jan. 2. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the incidents and it remains unclear whether the two assaults were coordinated or not. National Route 6 is a main thoroughfare connecting the city of Segou with Bamako.

A heightened security presence will likely remain in the area over the coming days. Local security measures could include movement restrictions, vehicle checks, or curfews. Further attacks along the National Route 6 are possible.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across Mali, particularly in the nation's central and northern regions. Local security forces remain largely unable to completely counter the threat posed by the Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and affiliated splinter groups. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces on a regular basis.

Advice

Avoid the affected areas over the coming days. Exercise a high degree of vigilance due to the threat of militant violence across the central regions of the country. Conduct travel during daylight hours with a security escort and only following a review of the route. Heed all official directives. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
