Warning

Event

Protesters from San Blas Atempa have erected a blockade along Highway 185, near Puente de Madera, Oaxaca, on Jan. 17. Demonstrators are protesting against the installation of industrial parks in the area, and demand to see David Hernandez Salazar, their municipal agent who was allegedly kidnapped by the authorities. Participants are reportedly armed with sticks and stones and have set a vehicle on fire. Additionally, protesters have reportedly taken over a bus with 33 French tourists.

Authorities are highly likely to deploy to monitor and manage roadblocks. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to disperse the demonstration and remove blockades forcibly. Transport and business disruptions are highly likely over the coming hours.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Do not attempt to cross protester roadblocks. Wait for the police to remove them. Plan for localized ground travel delays.
