Argentina: Striking farmers protesting along routes connecting Buenos Aires and Rosario Feb. 28
Striking farmers protesting along routes connecting Buenos Aires and Rosario, Argentina, Feb. 28. Disruptions likely.
Event
Farmers affiliated with several unions, including the Argentine Agrarian Federation (Federacion Agraria Argentina, FAA), are staging protests associated with a 48-hour strike early Feb. 28. Protesters are blocking sections of National Route 9, which connects the cities of Buenos Aires and Rosario, as well as Provincial Route 90 near Villa Constitucion and San Pedro. Participants are demanding several concessions, including the suspension of income tax and the elimination of export duties.
Protesters may gather in other locations across the provinces of Santa Fe and Buenos Aires. Business and transport disruptions are likely to continue during the strike. While most protests will probably remain peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building. Allow additional transport time to reach destinations near protests. Do not attempt to drive through any protester roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them before proceeding. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
