Power outages reported throughout Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area on March 14 due to adverse weather conditions. Disruptions are ongoing.

Warning

Event

Power outages have been reported across the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area on March 14 due to an intense heat wave. Reports indicate over 50,000 people have been affected in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan area. The cities of Berazategui, Esteban Echeverria, Ezeiza, Lomas de Zamora, Lanus, and Canuelas have been some of the most affected points in the region, as well the Recoleta, Flores, and Mataderos neighborhoods within the capital city. Officials have not given an estimated timeframe for when services will be fully restored.

Disruptions to local transport, businesses, and telecommunications are likely into at least late March 15. Power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and gas stations. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages. Public transportation, especially train and metro services, are also likely to be affected.

Advice

Plan for local transit disruptions. Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are operational, including after power is restored.
