Bangladesh: Bangladesh Nationalist Party to hold rallies and marches in Dhaka May 17-27
Bangladesh Nationalist Party plan to stage rallies and marches in Dhaka, Bangladesh, May 17-27. Increased security likely.
Event
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) plans to hold demonstrations across Dhaka from May 17 over several demands, including a push for the next general elections to occur under a neutral caretaker government. Participation is likely to be in the hundreds. Organizers have announced rallies at 14:00 on the following days:
May 17: March from Basabo Playground to Khilgaon Community Center. Activists will also march from Subastu Tower in North Badda to Abul Hotel in Rampura.
May 19: Rally at Shyamoli Playground.
May 20: Rally at Pirjongi Mazar in Motijheel.
May 23: March in the area of Dhanmondi. Activists will also march from Bagbari in Gabtali to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).
May 26: Rally at Jatrabari Ideal School and in the area near Shyampur Lal Mosque.
May 27: Rally at Rajuk College area in Uttara.
Additional demonstrations may occur. Authorities will likely increase security near the rally sites and along the march routes. Officials may refuse permission for events at short notice. Localized transport disruptions are likely due to increased security measures and marches. Clashes between police and BNP activists, as well as between BNP supporters and rival political groups, cannot be ruled out. Officials may also conduct mass arrests if activists defy orders to disperse.
Advice
Avoid the demonstrations. Allow additional travel time near the rally sites and march routes. Heed all official security and transport advisories. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a secure, nongovernmental facility.
