Bolivia: Protests planned in Santa Cruz de la Sierra through at least June 2

Activists plan to protest in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, through at least June 2; heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Former employees of the now-defunct Banco Fassil plan to hold multiple protests in Santa Cruz de la Sierra through at least June 2 to demand the payment of wages and social benefits that they claim are owed to them. Protesters reportedly held a sit-in demonstration outside the Financial System Supervisory Authority (ASFI) offices in the city and blocked parts of the First Ring Road May 31. Additionally, the activists have announced that they will march on June 1 from the former headquarters of the bank on Avenida Marcelo Terceros Banzer (i.e., the Fourth Ring Road) to the Christ the Redeemer Monument (Monumento Cristo Redentor). On June 2, activists have vowed to block unspecified roads; protesters have also threatened to occupy "some state institutions." Protest organizers have asserted that related demonstrations may be held in other locations across the country, as well.

Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence to areas impacted by related protests. Significant transport disruptions are likely in areas subject to protest activity and increased security. Public service disruptions are possible if activists occupy state administrative buildings. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators or reopen any blocked routes.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs in your area, immediately leave the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to drive through any roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them instead. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
