Heightened security likely on Route Nationale 39 after bomb blast wounds seven UN peacekeepers north of Douentza, Mopti Region, Mali, May 6.

Informational

Event

Heightened security is likely along Route Nationale 39 (RN39) over the coming days after a bomb explosion wounded seven UN peacekeepers affiliated with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) near Douentza, Mopti Region, May 6. The explosive device reportedly detonated under a MINUSMA convoy about 34 km (21 miles) north of the town. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, and no further information regarding the attack was immediately reported.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across Mali, particularly in the nation's central and northern areas. Despite long-running security operations in the region, local security forces remain largely unable to counter the threat posed by Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and related splinter groups. Such armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces on a regular basis. The May 6 attack on the MINUSMA convoy is not indicative of a further escalation in regional security risks, which nonetheless remain high.

Advice

Maintain heightened vigilance if operating in Mopti Region or other areas in central Mali due to the threat of militant violence. Consider conducting travel with a security escort during daylight hours and only following a detailed review of your route. Heed all official directives. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
