Authorities in Bangladesh likely to heighten security in Tarakanda Upazila, Mymensingh Division, in response to protest and clashes June 1.

Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence in Tarakanda Upazila, Mymensingh Division, in response to clashes that broke out between Awami League (AL) supporters and another political candidate on June 1. On late June 1, protesters allegedly blocked a bus station area and committed vandalism at several locations, including a gas station near a highway connecting to Sherpur. The clashes reportedly left at least eight people shot. The violence comes as local government elections are slated to occur June 12.
Authorities may implement enhanced security measures, including public gathering restrictions and pedestrian checks, through June 12. Additional demonstrations and clashes cannot be ruled out. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in areas subject to heightened security or unrest.
Tarakanda is located approximately 116 km (72 miles) north of Dhaka.
