Bolivia: Activists launch indefinite protest blocking bridges in Santa Cruz Department as of June 23

Activist group staging indefinite protest in Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia, blocking bridges on National Routes 4 and 10 as of June 23.

Warning

Event

A local activist group has launched indefinite protests blocking the Puerto Pailas Bridge on National Route 4 and the Banegas Bridge on National Route 10 in Santa Cruz Department as of June 23. The purpose of the action is to demand that authorities respect an agreement between the departmental and national governments to build a new highway in the area.

The protests are causing transport disruptions along National Routes 4 and 10, largely cutting off the departmental capital, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, from the areas in the department east of the city. Police will likely deploy to the protest locations. While the demonstrations will probably remain mostly peaceful, clashes cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters and reopen the bridges.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; wait for police to clear them instead. Allow for additional transport time. Consider delaying transport east of Santa Cruz de la Sierra until disruptions have subsided. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
