Mali: Activists to stage an anti-MINUSMA protest in Bamako June 23

Activist group to hold anti-MINUSMA protest in Bamako, Mali, June 23. Heigthened security likely; airport disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with the Yerewolo Debout sur les Remparts civil society group plan to stage a protest march from the Africa Tower to the United Nations operations base located next to Bamako's Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO) starting from 14:00 June 23. The purpose of the action, dubbed the "final mobilization caravan," is to demand the immediate departure of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) from the country. Thereafter, participants plan to gather for the arrival of Foreign Affairs Minister Abdoulaye Diop at BKO. It remains unclear how many participants the events may draw.

Authorities will likely deploy additional personnel around the protest march as a precaution; localized business and transportation disruptions are likely. Given the pro-government nature of the march, clashes between police and demonstrators are unlikely, except if protesters are overly disruptive. Disruptions in accessing BKO are possible.

Context

Yerewolo Debout sur les Remparts has been one of Mali's most vocal critics of MINUSMA and proponents of the mission's withdrawal from the country. The group has a history of protest activity in Bamako, with demonstrations sometimes turning violent. It is unlikely that the organization will relent in its campaign demanding MINUSMA's departure; on the contrary, Yerewolo's activities could intensify if their demands are not met.

Advice

Avoid any protests that materialize. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes erupt nearby, leave the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a secure nongovernmental building. Allow for additional time for travel to and from the airport on the afternoon of June 23.
