Mali: Heightened security likely after June 27 armed attack on the villages of Gaena and Boya Goundya, Gao Region, killing at least 17 people
At least 17 people killed in armed attack on the villages of Gaena and Boya, Gao Region, Mali, June 27. Increased security likely.
Event
The Malian military will almost certainly maintain an increased security posture near the villages of Gaena and Boya Goundya in the Gao Region's Gabero township over the coming days after late June 27 armed attacks by suspected militants killed at least 17 people. Reports indicate armed attackers targeted Boya Goundya village killing at least 14 followed by an assault on the neighboring village of Gaena killing three and injuring several others. The attack is reportedly a reprisal attack for the death of a member associated with the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) during an armed clash with the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Local security measures could include movement restrictions, vehicle checks, or curfews. Further attacks against the civilian population and armed clashes against the security forces are likely.
Gaina and Boya Goundya are located approximately 45 km (28 miles) south of Gao.
Context
Recent calls for the departure of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) from the security theater of operations in Mali will likely encourage militants to expand their territories further. The Malian Armed Forces and foreign mercenaries are poised to fend off militant attacks; however, they are unlikely to overcome the immediate security threat.
Insecurity is prevalent across Mali, particularly in the nation's central and northern regions. Despite long-running security operations in the region, security forces remain largely unable to counter the threat posed by numerous militant jihadist groups. Such armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces on a regular basis.
Advice
Maintain heightened vigilance if operating in Gao Region or other areas in northern Mali due to the threat of further militant violence. Consider conducting travel with a security escort during daylight hours and only following a detailed review of your route. Heed all official directives. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
