Argentina: Activists protest and block roads in downtown Buenos Aires as of afternoon of July 4

Activists protest and block roads in downtown Buenos Aires, Argentina, as of afternoon of July 4. Disruptions reported.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with the Piquetera Unit (UP) organization are demonstrating and blocking traffic in downtown Bueno Aires as of the afternoon of July 4 to demand increased social program funding for soup kitchens. Activists initially gathered on Avenida de Mayo and 9 de Julio; however, they have expanded to several other roads, including Av. Santa Fe and Carlos Pellegrini, Calzada Circular de Solis and Rivadavia, where they burned tires. Activists have threatened to camp in the area starting at 19:00 if Victoria Tolosa Paz, Minister of Social Development, does not meet their demands.

Increased security and localized transport and business disruptions are almost certain in central Buenos Aires over the coming hours. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Consider seeking alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area.
