Argentina: Indigenous activists marching towards Buenos Aires for Aug. 1 protest denouncing Jujuy province legislation
Indigenous activists in Argentina marching to Buenos Aires for Aug. 1 protest over Jujuy legislation. Tight security, disruptions likely.
Event
Indigenous activists are carrying out a national march from several locations across the country to Buenos Aires as of early July 31 for demonstrations in the capital Aug. 1; protesters are pressing for greater indigenous rights and the overturning of recently enacted legislation in Jujuy Province. In Rosario, demonstrators plan to gather in Plaza Pringles from 10:30 July 31 before marching to the Monument to the Flag (Monumento a la Bandera). Activists will then proceed to Buenos Aires for demonstrations outside the Supreme Court and the National Congress Aug. 1 to coincide with Pachamama Day, an indigenous festival. Hundreds to several thousand participants are likely.
Additional demonstrations may occur in other locations nationwide. Heightened security, localized transport, and business disruptions are likely near protest sites. Protesters may erect roadblocks. Clashes between police and activists are possible.
Context
Jujuy has passed a new constitution limiting the legality of demonstrations; widespread civil unrest in Jujuy in recent weeks has led to clashes, blockades, and dozens of injuries.
Advice
Avoid protests as a precaution. If clashes occur, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Plan for localized transport disruptions. Heed the directives of authorities. Do not attempt to circumvent blockades; wait for authorities to dismantle them.
