Bangladesh: Additional clashes likely to occur nationwide through July 19 amid opposing political party marches /update 2
Further clashes likely in Bangladesh through July 19 amid political marches that left at least one person killed and 100 others injured.
Event
Additional clashes are likely to occur nationwide through July 19 amid opposing political party marches that have left at least one person killed and 100 others wounded on July 18. On July 18, several clashes and other forms of violence, including arson and vandalism, occurred in several areas - such as Bogura, Dhaka, Khagrachhari, Lakshmipur, Mirpur, and Pirojpur. The ruling Awami League (AL) party and primary opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have planned to stage a series of marches nationwide through July 19 ahead of the country's January 2024 elections.
Organizers have announced the following specific demonstrations:
July 19
AL supporters reportedly plan to march in Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh, and Rangpur;
BNP supporters plan to assemble along Abdullahpur Highway at 10:00 before marching to the Jatra Bari area; the demonstration is slated to end at 16:00.
Further related demonstrations and rallies are possible elsewhere across Bangladesh on July 19. Sites for such gatherings could include prominent government buildings, press clubs, public squares, sports fields, and major thoroughfares. Previous gatherings sponsored by the two parties have drawn very large crowds.
Authorities will almost certainly continue to monitor the rallies and may move to disperse any groups that become overly disruptive. Security personnel in Bangladesh have a history of using force to disperse unruly crowds. Clashes between police and activists, as well as among members of opposing political camps, cannot be ruled out. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely near any large demonstrations that may occur.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased potential for violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
