Bangladesh: Bangladesh Nationalist Party to lead nationwide protest marches July 18-19

Bangladesh Nationalist Party to stage nationwide protest marches July 18-19. Increased security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The primary opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will lead nationwide protest marches July 18-19 to demand the next general election occur under a non-partisan administration. As part of their action, BNP activists plan to lead marches in all cities and district headquarters. On July 18, organizers will march from an undisclosed location in Gabtoli Upazila, Rajshahi Division, to Dhaka's Jatra Bari area. On July 19, demonstrators will assemble along Abdullahpur Highway before proceeding toward Bahadur Shah Park in Dhaka. Although organizers did not immediately provide additional details, typical gathering sites include prominent government buildings, press clubs, public squares, sports grounds, and thoroughfares. Previous well-attended gatherings have attracted thousands of participants.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor the rallies and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists, as well as among members of opposing rival camps, cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators could block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated localized business disruptions are possible through the evening of July 19.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near the gathering site. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
