Bangladesh: Opposing political parties to stage nationwide marches July 18-19 /update 1
BNP and Awami League to stage opposing marches across Bangladesh July 18-19. Clashes possible; avoid all demonstrations.
Event
The ruling Awami League (AL) party and primary opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) plan to stage a series of marches nationwide July 18-19; the actions are part of the two parties' preparations for the country's January 2024 elections. Organizers have announced the following specific demonstrations:
July 18
AL processions in Barishal, Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Sylhet; exact march routes and start times remain unclear;
BNP marches in all cities and districts between 10:00-16:00, including a march from Gabtoli Upazila in the Rajshahi Division to Dhaka's Bahadur Shah Park.
July 19
AL supporters reportedly plan to march in Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh, and Rangpur;
BNP supporters to assemble along Abdullahpur Highway at 10:00 before marching to Jatra Bari area; demonstration slated to end at 16:00.
Additional related demonstrations and rallies are possible elsewhere across Bangladesh July 18-19. Sites for such gatherings could include prominent government buildings, press clubs, public squares, sports fields, and major thoroughfares. Previous gatherings sponsored by the two parties have drawn very large crowds.
Authorities will almost certainly monitor the rallies and may move to disperse any groups that become overly disruptive. Security personnel in Bangladesh have a history of using force to disperse unruly crowds. Clashes between police and activists, as well as among members of opposing political camps, cannot be ruled out. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near any large demonstrations that may occur.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near the gathering site. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
