Mali: Unionized finance sector workers to stage a nationwide strike July 26-28
Unionized finance sector workers to stage 72-hour strike nationwide across Mali from 00:01 July 26-00:01 July 28.
Event
Unionized financial workers affiliated with the National Union of Banks, Insurance, Financial Institutions, and Businesses (SYNABEF) and the National Federation of Petroleum, Commerce, Insurance, and Banks (FENPECAB) plan to stage a 72-hour nationwide strike from 11:59 July 26- 00:01 July 28. Organizers aim to address several grievances, including regularizing temporary finance workers, restoring employment to previously dismissed workers, denouncing alleged injustice against banks and bankers, and upholding trade union rights, among other issues. The labor action will probably not disrupt internet and mobile banking services, though businesses that rely on in-person financial services may face disruptions during the strike. Organizers have threatened to renew the walkout for an additional 96-hours if their demands are unmet; the extension will be from July 31 to August 3.
While organizers have not announced plans for demonstrations, protests are possible during the strike action. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, mainly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse. Counter-protests may occur if the strike is prolonged.
Advice
Plan for banking and financial service disruptions nationwide. Avoid any possible protests due to the potential for clashes. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
