Argentina: Authorities to increase security measures in several provinces, following reports of looting against private businesses Aug. 22-23
Officials to increase security measures in several provinces of Argentina due to reports of looting and robberies Aug. 22-23.
Event
Authorities in Argentina plan to increase security and coordinate with local and provincial officials to combat a string of lootings and rumors of lootings in multiple areas Aug. 22-23. Several businesses were reportedly looted or suffered attempts of looting on Aug. 22, especially in municipalities outside the city of Buenos Aires, as well as in the provinces of Cordoba, Neuquen, and Mendoza. There were also rumors of additional lootings circulating throughout social media and via cell phones, which were eventually considered to be fake. Authorities arrested more than 50 suspects. Several business owners closed their businesses in the affected areas late Aug. 22 and Aug. 23, to guard against potential acts of violence. The Independent Movement of Retirees and Unemployed (Movimiento Independiente de Jubilados y Desocupados), took responsibility for calling on its members and supporters to loot; however, the cause of the events are still being investigated.
Heightened security is likely, especially in the most impacted cities. Multiple businesses in the affected provinces may be closed Aug. 23-25, as the situation returns to normal, and reports and fears of acts of violence diminish.
Advice
Strictly heed instructions of authorities. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in some of the affected locations. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any security disturbance.
