A magnitude-5.6 earthquake occurred in Eritrea at around 20:15 Aug. 1. The epicenter was about 65 km (40 miles) east-southeast of Asmara. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light-to-moderate shaking was probably felt throughout much of Eritrea and parts of far northern Ethiopia. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, some damage is possible in areas near the epicenter. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
