Mali: Increased security likely after suspected militant attack in Mopti Region's Yaro village left at least 21 dead, several injured Aug. 19

The Malian military will almost certainly maintain an increased security posture near Yaro village, Mopti Region, over the coming days after a suspected militant attack left at least 21 dead and 11 others injured on Aug. 19. Conflicting eyewitness reports suggest that casualty figures may be higher; however, officials have as yet confirmed the figures. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Local security measures could include movement restrictions, vehicle checks, or curfews. Further attacks against the civilian population and armed clashes against the security forces are likely.

Yaro village is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) southeast of Mopti City.

Context

Recent calls for the departure of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) from the security theater of operations in Mali will likely encourage militants to expand their territories further.
