Mali: Heightened security presence in Gao Region through at least Oct. 9
Authorities to impose 20:00-06:00 curfew in Gao Region, Mali, through at least Oct. 9. Heightened security, disruptions likely.
Event
Officials will enforce a 20:00-06:00 nightly curfew in the Gao Region through at least Oct. 9 following recent attacks, clashes, and a security statement by armed groups in the area. These groups reportedly comprise a broader coalition of cosigners of a major peace agreement. Security force vehicles are exempt from the measure.
An increased security presence is likely across Gao during this period. Police could also set up checkpoints within and between towns to enforce movement restrictions. Associated transport and business disruptions are probable.
Context
The heightened security posture is in response to increased attacks by armed Permanent Strategic Framework (CSP) members in recent weeks. The CSP alleges that the military junta in Bamako has repeatedly violated the peace agreement, forcing the CSP to defend themselves. Militants staged a suicide attack on a military base in northern Mali Sept. 8. Additionally, 64 people were killed by militants on a boat between Timbuktu and Gao Sept. 7. Despite tight security, further episodes of targeted crime, violence, and associated protests are possible over the coming weeks.
Advice
Strictly heed all official directives. Always carry proper identification; be polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint. Ensure sufficient time to travel in the affected areas before the curfew comes into effect.
