Militant group claims responsibility for attack against military base adjacent to Gao Airport, Mali, Sept. 8.
Event
Al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for an attack against a military base adjacent to Gao Airport (GAQ) early Sept. 8. Security officials confirmed the attack. While details are still emerging, reports indicate that the assault involved suicide bomb attacks and mortar shells. The casualty toll and potential damages to GAQ are unclear. This is the third attack occurring between Timbuktu and Gao since Sept. 7, when two attacks attributed to the JNIM killed at least 64 people along the Niger River. Further such attacks are likely in the near term.
Security forces will remain highly vigilant in the area over the coming days due to the uptick in attacks. Security measures could include movement restrictions, vehicle checks, and curfews.
