Mali: Sky Mali cancels commercial flights to and from Tombouctou and Gao after shells land near Tombouctou Airport Sept. 11

Sky Mali cancels flights to and from Tombouctou and Gao, Mali, through at least Sept. 16 after shells land near Tombouctou Airport Sept. 11.

Warning

Event

Sky Mali (ML) has suspended all of its commercial flights to and from Tombouctou (TOM) and Gao International (GAQ) airports through at least Sept. 16, citing a "security alert" that occurred at TOM Sept. 11. Shells fired by suspected militants reportedly landed near TOM early Sept. 11, including two that impacted the local United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) camp. The shelling resulted in minor damage, and no casualties were reported in connection with the attack.

Sky Mali may extend, modify, or rescind the flight suspension at TOM and GAQ on short notice. Similar shelling attacks are possible in Tombouctou over the coming days. Any additional shelling may cause localized transport and business disruptions.

Context

The shelling in Tombouctou and consequent cancellation of commercial flights come amid a month-long blockade of the city by fighters affiliated with the Al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) militant organization. The blockade has cut off access to the city by road and the Niger River, leading to a shortage of food and other supplies as well as social services. Before the flight suspension, Sky Mali's service to and from Tombouctou was the last viable transport link connecting the city to Bamako.

The militants' blockade has also impacted other locations in Tombouctou Region, including Ber, Dire, Goundam, Lere, Niafounke, Rharous, and Tonka.

Advice

Consider avoiding travel to Tombouctou until the situation stabilizes. Confirm flight reservations if scheduled to fly via TOM or GAQ over the coming weeks. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation if operating in Tombouctou Region or Gao Region. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
