Warning

Event

Officials have announced plans to defuse an unexploded WWII-era bomb in Duisburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, late Oct. 5. The bomb was reportedly discovered earlier in the day during construction work near the intersection of Zieglerstrasse and Felsenstrasse in the Duissern area of the city. Authorities have demarcated an evacuation zone with a radius of approximately 500 meters (547 yards) around the site, impacting nearly 6,700 people. Officials have indicated that the roads, railway line, and buildings within the evacuation zone will be closed from 22:00, which may cause significant transport disruptions. The evacuation order and heightened security measures will also cause localized business disruptions. Authorities have advised individuals to avoid the affected area until further notice. Officials did not immediately estimate how long the bomb disposal operation would take to complete.

Residual disruptions to business and transport - including rail transport disruptions impacting Duisburg Central Station - are likely even after authorities finish their bomb disposal work in the area.

Advice

Avoid the affected area until authorities give the all-clear. Reconfirm train reservations if scheduled to travel via Duisburg Central Station Oct. 5-6; do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Allow additional time if traveling near the evacuation zone and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
