Argentina: Heightened security likely in lead-up to runoff election Nov. 19
Lead-up to runoff election likely to prompt heightened security in Argentina through Nov. 19.
Authorities will likely deploy heightened security nationwide before and during the Nov. 19 runoff elections, including at any campaign events and election-related facilities. Large-scale political events and some demonstrations have occurred in recent weeks. These will almost certainly continue in the coming days.
Security measures will also be in place for presidential candidates as they engage in several activities in the lead-up to the election. Presidential Candidate Sergio Massa will be attending several meetings and events in the capital, including at Colegio Nacional Carlos Pellegrini in the afternoon of Nov. 16. Heightened security will also be in place in Cordoba as presidential candidate Javier Milei will participate in a rally from 18:00 Nov. 16.
Security measures will likely prompt road closures, particularly near polling stations on election day, and may cause disruptions to travel and business operations. Clashes between supporters of rival political groups remain possible before, during, and after the vote, particularly in urban areas. Similar security measures and gatherings are possible after the polls.
Exercise caution in the lead-up to and during voting, particularly near large gatherings and in the proximity of polling stations. Make allowances for possible localized transport disruptions near said stations. Avoid any demonstrations as a precaution. Heed the instructions from authorities.
