Germany: Pharmacists to demonstrate in Dresden, strike across eastern Germany Nov. 29

Pharmacists to protest at Semperoper in Dresden, Germany, from 14:00 Nov. 29 as part of regionwide strike. Heightened security likely.

Informational

Pharmacists affiliated with the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists (ABDA) plan to protest at the Semperoper (2 Theaterplatz) in Dresden from 14:00 Nov. 29 to demand higher salaries and increased state support. This is the latest in a series of ABDA demonstrations dating back to June and the fourth ABDA-organized action of November. It is unclear how many demonstrators may attend; however, ABDA protests in recent weeks in Stuttgart, Dortmund, and Hanover drew between 3,000 and 5,000 participants. The protest coincides with a one-day strike affecting up to 3,000 pharmacies in Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia; however, several hundred emergency pharmacies will remain open throughout the affected regions.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out. Pharmacy services may be unavailable.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Semperoper. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Plan to access required pharmacy services on the days preceding or following the walkout.
