Argentina: Activists demonstrate in Mar del Plata Dec. 29

Activists protest near Radio City Roxy Melany Theatre in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Dec. 29 ahead of the president's arrival.

Warning

Activists associated with the education and public health sector and concerned citizens are protesting near the Radio City Roxy Melany theatre in Mar del Plata on Dec. 29 ahead of President Javier Milei's arrival. Protesters have gathered at the San Martin monument since 15:00 to denounce President Milei's Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) bill. Demonstrators have stated they plan to maintain a roadblock on Luro Avenue; however, they have yet to rule out a march to the Roxy Theater on San Luis Street. Police have deployed heavily to the area and have established increased security measures such as roadblocks and security cordons.

Heightened security in the area, with associated transport disruptions, is likely. Activists may march to the Radio City Roxy Melany theatre on San Luis Street, prompting clashes between protesters and police.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating in Mar del Plata. Heed instructions from authorities.

Previously, the Workers' General Confederation (Confederacion General de Trabajadores, CGT) and other unions and political parties staged several demonstrations in multiple locations throughout Argentina Dec. 27. The protests were to oppose a series of measures announced by President Javier Milei, who took office on Dec. 10. Milei plans to reduce public spending and privatize several government institutions; he announced some of these steps by decree.
