Heightened security and localized disruptions are likely in Buenos Aires Dec. 10 during Argentina's presidential inauguration ceremonies. President-Elect Javier Milei will be sworn into office at the National Congress at around 12:00. Following several events, Milei will leave Congress for Plaza de Mayo, where he will walk to the Casa Rosada (presidential palace). Later, a non-denominational service will take place at the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral, followed by a cultural performance at Teatro Colon.
Police have announced street closures and special security operations in several areas of central Buenos Aires, including Plaza del Congreso, Plaza de Mayo, and Teatro Colon. Affected thoroughfares will include Paseo Colon, Leandro Alem, Corrientes, Avenida Belgrano, and Avenida 9 de Julio, among others.
Numerous foreign dignitaries will be present for the ceremony. Transport and business disruptions are likely through central Buenos Aires and other areas of the capital through at least early Dec. 11. Protests by activists opposing the incoming government cannot be ruled out.
Heed instructions from authorities. Allow additional time to reach destinations in Buenos Aires Dec. 10. Avoid any protests that may materialize.
