Argentina: Protesters to march in Buenos Aires Dec. 20 /update 1

Activists change gathering points for Dec. 20 protests in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Disruptions likely.

Informational

Demonstrators associated with social activist groups opposed to President Javier Milei, including the Piquetera Unit (Unidad Piquetera), announced they changed previous plans to gather outside the National Congress building at 16:00 Dec. 20 and will instead gather at the intersection of Avenida Presidente Julio Argentino Roca, commonly known as Diagonal Sur, and Avenida Belgrano. Additionally, demonstrators will gather at the intersection of Avenida Roque Saenz Pena, widely known as Diagonal Norte and Calle Florida. From these points, protesters will likely march to the Plaza de Mayo.

The change in protest location comes after a major deployment of police near the National Congress. Despite the change, protest gatherings and blockades are possible in other areas of Buenos Aires. Additional police will deploy across several locations in Buenos Aires on Dec. 20, such as at the Constitucion, Pompeya, Once, and Retiro train stations, along Puente Pueyrredon, and at the Plaza de Mayo.

Increased security measures are likely near demonstration sites; localized transit disruptions, including on mass transit, as well as business disruptions, are also likely. As the Piqueteros are known for organizing large protests, clashes are possible.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Allow additional transport time to reach destinations near rally venues. Do not attempt to drive through any protester roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them before proceeding. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
