Bolivia: Activists to stage protest march in downtown Sucre from 17:00 Jan. 11

Protesters to march in Sucre, Bolivia, starting at 17:00 Jan. 11 to denounce extension of magistrates' terms; transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the National Committee for the Defense of Democracy (Comite Nacional de Defensa de la Democracia, CONADE) plan to stage a protest march in downtown Sucre starting at 17:00 Jan. 11. The purpose of the protest is to denounce the extension of magistrates' terms in office as authorized by the country's Plurinational Constitutional Court (Tribunal Constitucional Plurinacional, TCP) and demand the "closure" of various judicial bodies, including the TCP, the Supreme Court of Justice (Tribunal Supremo de Justicia), the Judicial Council (Consejo de la Magistratura), and Agro-environmental Court (Tribunal Agroambiental). Demonstrators plan to gather at Plaza del Reloj, also known as Plaza Alto de la Alianza. While protest organizers did not immediately specify the intended destination of the march, the protesters will probably march to the TCP building, located on Avenida del Maestro. Hundreds of people will likely participate in the demonstration.

Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence to monitor the protest march. The march and any heightened security measures that authorities impose will probably cause localized transport disruptions. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest march as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to avoid the demonstration and any related disruptions if operating in Sucre Jan. 11. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
