Bolivia: Heightened security in Sucre ahead of farmer's protest from Jan. 15 /update 1

Officials have heightened security near the Plurinational Constitutional Court (Tribunal Constitucional Plurinacional, TCP) and other government buildings in Sucre, Jan. 15, ahead of a planned protest by farmers associated with the Single Union Confederation of Peasant Workers of Bolivia (Confederacion Sindical Unica de Trabajadores Campesinos de Bolivia). The purpose of the action is to protest the extension of magistrates' terms in office as authorized by the TCP. Protesters are demanding elections. Hundreds of people are likely to gather for the demonstrations.

Gatherings are likely near government buildings, including the TCP. Officials will likely deploy to protest sites. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out. Protesters could erect roadblocks causing travel disruption. Demonstrations over the issue could persist for several days.

Avoid all protests. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
