Germany: Labor unions plan nationwide rail strike, 02:00 Jan. 24-06:00 Jan. 29

German labor union plans further rail strike 02:00 Jan. 24-06:00 Jan; widespread national, local, and international rail disruptions likely.

Warning

The German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) has announced a further nationwide rail strike 02:00 Jan. 24-06:00 Jan. 29 over pay and working conditions. Deutsche Bahn (DB), the national rail operating company, warns of severe disruptions to long-distance and regional services, and to the S-Bahn in Berlin. International services to neighboring countries will also likely be affected. DB Cargo rail drivers plan to strike from 18:00 Jan. 23; this action will impact freight transport.

Unless averted, the strike will likley impact freight and passenger services in Germany, including those scheduled to cross the borders with Luxembourg, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Switzerland. Widespread rail transport disruptions are likely during the strike period. Increased demand for alternative transport is likely. Available rail services will likely experience increased congestion. Disruptions to some services may continue in the hours following the end of the industrial action. Protests are possible at transport hubs. Heightened security may accompany any protests that materialize.

Reconfirm all rail travel. Consider taking alternative transport methods if booked to travel by train during the strike period. Allow additional time for vehicular transport. Avoid all areas that are subject to related protest activity. Heed instructions from authorities.

This is the fourth strike in recent weeks, as apart of an ongoing GDL labor union campaign. Previous strikes in mid-November, early December, and early January all resulted in significant rail service disruptions. Further industrial action is likely.
