Electrical substation catches fire in Caballito area of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Feb. 10; power outages, evacuations, heavy smoke reported.

Warning

Authorities are responding to a fire that ignited at an electrical substation in the Caballito area of Buenos Aires Feb. 10. The substation fire, located near the intersection of Avenida Jose Maria Moreno and Formosa, has reportedly left tens of thousands of customers without power in the area and prompted authorities to evacuate nearby buildings. Authorities did not immediately report the cause of the fire, nor did officials immediately report any associated casualties. The fire has emitted thick, black smoke, which may noticeably worsen air quality in surrounding areas over the short term.

Officials will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the area until emergency crews extinguish the blaze and vacate the scene. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely over the coming hours. Additionally, power outages caused by the fire may result in telecommunications disruptions in some areas. Authorities may close roads or issue additional evacuation orders on short notice to facilitate the emergency response.

Avoid the affected area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations. Consider remaining indoors if heavy smoke is in your area, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Heed all official instructions, including evacuation orders.
