Government authorities have announced the Feb. 26 release of three Italians kidnapped in Koutiala, Sikasso Region, in May 2022. Reports suggest the victims had been held by an Islamic militant group affiliated with Al-Qaeda, possibly Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM). The victims were released through a joint Malian-Italian collaboration. Further circumstances surrounding their release remain unknown, including whether a ransom was demanded or paid.
Koutiala is located approximately 278 km (173 mi) east of Bamako.
