Police operation ongoing in Complexo da Mare, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 9. Ground transport disruptions possible.
Authorities are conducting a security operation in Complexo da Mare in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro on May 9. The operation is led by the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE) and is mainly affecting the Salsa, Pinheiro, and Vila do Joao areas of Complexo da Mare. At least two individuals have reportedly been injured in armed clashes with security forces. Suspects also erected multiple barricades in the affected areas.
Heightened security and disruptions to business and traffic are likely in the affected area through at least late May 9. Transport disruptions, including along the Red Line Expressway (Linha Vermelha), which leads to Rio de Janeiro/Galeao - Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG), cannot be ruled out.
Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Avoid traveling to or through the affected areas of Rio de Janeiro. If within or near the affected areas, remain in accommodations until police give the all-clear.
