Bolivia: Troops withdraw from Plaza Murillo in La Paz as of evening of June 26, following military mutiny /update 2

Military forces withdraw from Plaza Murillo in La Paz, Bolivia, evening of June 26 following mutiny. Tight security likely nationwide.

Critical

As of the evening of June 26, military forces have withdrawn from Plaza Murillo in La Paz following an earlier uprising led by Andres Zuniga, the dismissed Commander General of the Army. Zuniga closed Plaza Murillo and attempted to take control of the government buildings. In response, President Luis Arce called on citizens to organize against the "attempted coup," which led to minor clashes between occupying military forces and civilians. To further address the situation, President Arce swore in three new generals for the Bolivian Army, Air Force, and Navy. Newly appointed Army General Jose Sanchez ordered the mobilized troops under Zuniga to return to their units, thus ending the mutiny. As of the evening of June 26, authorities have reportedly apprehended Zuniga at the General Staff in La Paz. Despite the withdrawal of military forces and Zuniga's arrest, authorities will likely maintain an increased security posture in La Paz, especially near government buildings.

Several opposition leaders to Arce, such as Carlos Mesa of the Citizen Community (Comunidad Ciudadana) party, have denounced the mutiny, as have foreign leaders, including the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Luis Almagro.

Authorities will likely maintain an increased security posture nationwide. Increased security measures such as roadblocks and security cordons may prompt disruptions in major urban areas, especially La Paz. Protests in support of President Acre and the government are possible over the coming days.

Avoid all areas where troops or police are gathering, especially in central La Paz. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Do not attempt to drive through any roadblocks that materialize. Consider delaying business activities and transport until the situation stabilizes. Reconfirm all appointments and flights.
