Bolivia: Truckers stage nationwide 48-hour strike and roadblocks June 3-4

Bolivian truckers stage 48-hour strike and roadblocks June 3-4. Ground freight delivery disruptions are likely.

Warning

Workers affiliated with the Confederation of National and International Heavy Transport of Bolivia (Confederacion del Transporte Pesado Nacional e Internacional de Bolivia) are staging a strike and roadblocks on June 3-4 across Bolivia. Traffic disruptions have been reported in the departments of La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Tarija, and Sucre as of early June 3. Protesters are also blocking Puente Espanol on National Route 12, which connects Oruro to Pisiga, a municipality near the Chile-Bolivia border. Blockades on the highways connecting Oruro and the cities of La Paz and Potosi are also planned. Participants are protesting a perceived lack of foreign currency, among other issues.

Further protests and road blockades are likely in cities and rural areas through June 4. Police will likely deploy to monitor the demonstrations. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators to reopen roadways.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow for additional transport time throughout Bolivia. Consider delaying nonessential transport until the protests end. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them instead. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
