Germany: Unionized port workers launch warning strike at several locations in north June 17

Unionized port workers launch warning strike at five ports in northern Germany on June 17. Port service disruptions possible.

Informational

Unionized port workers associated with the Verdi trade union launched warning strikes at the ports of Brake, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Emden, and Hamburg early June 17. The purpose of the labor action is to demand wage increases and improved work allowances. According to labor leaders, the work stoppages will last either 24 or 48 hours depending on the location; however, organizers have not specified which ports would remain off the job for which durations. Strike participants demonstrated at the headquarters of the Central Association of German Seaport Operators (Zentralverband der deutschen Seehafenbetriebe) on Sandtorkai in Hamburg on June 17; additional demonstrations are possible at other locations.

Maritime service disruptions are possible at affected ports into June 18. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that occur.

Reconfirm all maritime travel and shipping scheduled via affected ports for the strike period. As a standard precaution, avoid demonstration areas. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
