Mali: Unionized finance sector workers extend nationwide strike indefinitely from June 9 /update 1

Unionized finance sector workers extend ongoing strike across Mali indefinitely from June 9. Banking, financial services disruptions likely.

Informational

Unionized financial workers affiliated with the National Union of Banks, Insurance, Financial Establishments, Micro-Finance, and Commerce of Mali (SYNABEF) have announced an indefinite extension to their ongoing strike from June 9. The action, which began June 6, aims to address several grievances, including an alleged deposition warrant and arrest of the union's secretary general and deputy.

Unless averted, financial institutions such as banks will remain closed during the strike action. Large crowds may seek to withdraw funds near ATM cash machines still functioning in the capital city of Bamako and other major cities. The labor action will probably not impact internet and mobile banking services, though it may disrupt businesses that rely on in-person financial services. While organizers have not announced any planned demonstrations, protests are possible.

Plan for banking and financial service disruptions nationwide. Avoid any possible protests as a precaution. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
